Race Relations Town Hall Meeting Includes U.S. Department of Education Officials

PULLMAN, Wash. — Two U.S. Department of Education officials will participate in
Washington State University’s second annual Town Hall Meeting on Race Relations
Wednesday Oct. 13.
Open to the campus community and the public, it will be held from
9 a.m.-noon in the Compton Union Building Auditorium.
Carla Nuxoll, regional representative for Secretary of Education Richard Riley, will deliver
remarks at the event. Participating in the Town Hall panel discussion and wrap-up will be Audrey
Hutchinson, chief of staff in the DOE’s Office of Postsecodary Education.
Formerly chief of staff of President Clinton’s “Initiative on Race,” Hutchinson will wrap-up
the event with Bill Wassmuth, Northwest Coalition Against Malicious Harassment executive
director. He is Town Hall keynote speaker and facilitator.
Nuxoll represents U.S. Department of Education Region X, which includes Washington,
Idaho, Oregon and Alaska. Her office is in Seattle, however she lives in Spokane. Hutchinson
works in Washington, D.C., and lives in the Washington area.
According to Steve Nakata, WSU Multicultural Student Services director and chair of the
event’s planning committee, other Town Hall participants include Samuel Smith; WSU president;
Gretchen Bataille, provost; John Sherman, Pullman city supervisor; Doug Nelson, Pullman Public
Schools superintendent; Bernadett Buchanan, WSU student regent; Steve Wymer, Associated
Students of WSU president; Joseph Amador, a WSU graduate student; and WSU faculty
member Linda Vo of Comparative American Cultures.
Free vehicle parking for the event will be available 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the
Yellow 1 parking lot, next to Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum.
