PULLMAN, Wash. — Bill Wassmuth, Northwest Coalition Against Malicious Harassment
executive director, will be the featured speaker during Washington State University’s second
annual Town Hall Meeting on Race Relations.
The meeting, open to the campus community and the public, will be held 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 13
in the Compton Union Building Auditorium.
“It will build on the discussion started during last spring’s dialogue on race relations and
social justice in which Gov. Locke took part,” said Steve Nakata, WSU Multicultural Student
Services director and chair of the event’s planning committee. “WSU continues its effort to
improve race relations as part of its commitment to diversity.”
Following his address, Wassmuth, from Seattle, will moderate a panel discussion about race
relations at WSU and in the Pullman community. Nakata said the committee is making a “special
effort” to have a broadly representative panel. Panelists may include WSU students, faculty,
staff and community members, including City of Pullman and Pullman School District officials.
Questions from the panel discussion will come from results of a survey, said Nakata. “To
encourage community-wide discussions on race relations, committee members will be visiting
many group meetings throughout campus and the community during the next two weeks. Those
with whom they meet will be asked to complete a survey about perceptions of race relations in
our area.”
Those not contacted by the committee may obtain a survey to fill out and return. It will be
published Oct. 4 in the WSU Daily Evergreen student newspaper. Copies are available in the
Office of Multicultural Student Services, Lighty Student Services Building, Room 190, or by

Meeting sponsors include Multicultural Student Services, the WSU President’s Office,
Human Relations and Diversity, the Associated Students of WSU, the Graduate and Professional
Students Association, the Council of Multicultural Student Presidents and the Coalition of
Women Students.
