WSU Regents to Discuss New Degree Offerings, Construction Projects

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s Board of Regents will hold its regular
June meeting at the WSU Tree Fruit Research Extension Center in Wenatchee. The meeting is
scheduled for 10 a.m. on June 25 at 1100 N. Western Ave.
The board will be asked to extend the bachelor of science degree in computer engineering to
WSU Spokane. The overall program involves a partnership with the University of Idaho and
Gonzaga University.
Computer engineering is the fastest growing engineering field nationally and has been
identified as a primary area of need in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene area.
Other academic issues under discussion include offering a bachelor of science degree in
agriculture through distance learning. This degree would be aimed at time-, place- and
work-bound students through a cooperative program involving WSU, the University of Idaho,
Oregon State University and Eastern Oregon University.
The regents will also consider establishing a School of Biological Sciences in the College of
Sciences. If approved, the new school will combine existing programs in botany, zoology and
biology.
Several major construction project contracts are on the agenda. The regents will be asked to
authorize selection of design consultants for four new projects.
The projects include, in Pullman, a new $14.2 million Museum of Art building and a $33.5
million Johnson Hall addition; at WSU Spokane, a $44.5 million academic center; and at WSU
Vancouver, a $46.6 million academic building.
In June, the WSU regents typically hold their meeting at a branch campus or research
station location. This meeting will include a luncheon presentation from WSU-TFREC staff.
