Student Regent Has Regent’s Scholarship

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s newest student regent has a special
connection to another member of the board. Bernadett Buchanan, who joined the WSU Board of
Regents for a one-year appointment in May, has been receiving scholarship support from Regent
Ken Alhadeff.
Buchannan, a social studies/secondary education major from Spokane, expects to teach at
the high school level after graduation. She is also enrolled in the Future Teachers of Color
program at the WSU College of Education.
The FTOC program was started in 1994 in response to the demand for minority teachers in
the classroom. Alhadeff, a Seattle businessman, has supported the FTOC program by offering
scholarship money to participants and by underwriting recruitment events.
In 1998, Alhadeff pledged the largest individual gift for minority teacher education ever
offered in the Pacific Northwest. He guaranteed scholarship support totaling approximately
$500,000 to the students who attended a spring recruitment event at the WSU Pullman campus.
One of those attendees was Buchanan. She took advantage of the offer and was the
recipient of a $2,000 FTOC scholarship from Alhadeff in the fall of 1998. She will receive an
additional $1,000 in the fall of 1999 and $2,500 when she completes her student teaching
requirement.
Buchannan will attend her first WSU regents’ meeting in Pullman on June 11, a special
meeting on tuition. Her first regular regents’ meeting is in Wenatchee on June 25.
