PULLMAN, Wash. — Gov. Gary Locke has appointed Bernadett Buchanan of Spokane to the
Washington State University Board of Regents. She will begin serving her one-year term in June.
Buchanan is a senior majoring in social studies, with a minor in comparative American
cultures.
She becomes the second student regent to join the WSU board. Buchanan replaces Jannelle
Milodragovich, who was appointed for the 1998/99 school year. Milodragovich graduated in
May.
In 1998, Buchanan was the recipient of a WSU presidential award. She is involved in a
variety of leadership and multicultural activities.
During the past school year, Buchanan chaired the WSU Coalition for Women Students.
She served as a Peer Mentor intern for WSU Student Affairs, developed a Martin Luther King Jr.
arts and essay contest for the Pullman and Moscow school districts, and has been a presenter
for WSU’s Future Teachers of Color program.
Buchanan served as president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority in 1998/99. She was vice president
of the Black Women’s Caucus at WSU in 1997/98.
Each summer since 1993, she has worked as the recreation coordinator for youth at
Spokane’s East Central Community Center.
