PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University Provost Gretchen M. Bataille has named
three finalists for dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. The candidates will be available
during public sessions to be televised at all WSU campuses.
The candidates are David R. Gross, professor and head of the Department of Veterinary
Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois; Lance E. Perryman,
professor and head of the Department of Microbiology, Pathology and Parasitology, College of
Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University, Raleigh; and David O. Slausen, professor
and head of the Department of Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville.
Gross earned a doctorate in physiology from Ohio State University. His doctor of veterinary
medicine degree is from Colorado State University, where he is an honor alumnus. Gross has
owned and operated a private practice and served as president of the local Chamber of
Commerce. He has been a referee and reviewer for NATO Scientific Affairs Division, Advanced
Study Institute Programme since 1982.
Perryman, a WSU graduate, served as associate dean for research and graduate education
and director of the Animal Health Research Center, College of Veterinary Medicine at WSU from
1984-94. He has been a member of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Western
Regional Council, Joint Council on Food and Agriculture Sciences. He remains an active
committee member with the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Slauson is a graduate of the University of California, Davis. He has engaged in postdoctoral
study at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, La Jolla, Calif., Department of Experimental
Pathology. Slauson also holds a doctorate in education from the University of Tennessee. He
has coauthored a textbook on disease mechanisms. Slauson is a member of numerous national
advisory committees, including the National Institutes of Health, USDA, Morris Animal
Foundation and Gementec Corp.
Interim Director Terry McElwain has led WSU’s veterinary medicine college since former
dean Borje Gustafsson stepped down in 1998. McElwain also has served as a search committee
member for a new dean. The position will be effective June 1.
Dates for the candidates’ visits and presentations have not yet been set.
