PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University College of Education has joined the
top tier of graduate education programs, according to the national rankings published in the US
News and World Report on March 22. The college, which had not previously been selected in
the top 50 tier, was ranked 37th out of the 188 colleges in the nation that offer doctoral programs
in education.
The education programs were ranked according to the following criteria:
40 percent for the college’s reputation and 20 percent each for student selectivity, faculty
resources and research activity.
“This recognition of the quality of our program is great news for our college. We have
joined the elite ranks of the finest graduate programs in our country,” said Judy Mitchell, dean of
the college.
“Thanks to the quality faculty, staff and students at the college, we have achieved
recognized success in building accessible and innovative programs that are relevant and
responsive to the needs of both the K-12 system and the state’s educational reform efforts,” she
said.
As an example, Mitchell cited WSU’s field-based certification programs for school principals
and superintendents, and a hands-on internship program that meets at locations across
Washington and links participants by e-mail.
