Veterinary College Hosts National Student Conference

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine will
host the 1999 Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) Symposium March
18-20, for the first time in the college’s 100-year history.
The three-day symposium, co-hosted with Oregon State University, will be attended by
more than 800 veterinary students from across the nation. Student registrations and private
support fund the entire conference.
Academic events include lectures, clinical workshops and various academic competitions.
Competing will be teams representing the nation’s 27 veterinary colleges and veterinary colleges
from Canada, Morocco, and the island nation of St. Kitts.
A “Careers in Veterinary Medicine” exhibit will be open March 18 and 19 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
and March 20 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the outer concourse of WSU’s Beasley Coliseum.
Tours of the college, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the new Animal Diseases
Biotechnology Facility will be given daily.
Also planned are pre- and post- conference excursions, athletic contests and social
activities, including river rafting in Hell’s Canyon, a 5K run and evening dances.
Closing ceremonies and a banquet will be held on March 20 in WSU’s Beasley Coliseum.
Awards will include a national teaching award and recognition to students and veterinary
colleges who placed in academic and athletic competitions.
