PULLMAN, Wash. — Mel Haberman is the new associate dean for Research and Funded Projects at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education/WSU College of Nursing.
Haberman is the first person to fill the position created to support faculty research and cultivate new sources of extramural research funding. “I am excited to work with the faculty, students, administration and nurses in the community to facilitate nursing research,” Haberman says.
Haberman was formerly an assistant staff scientist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and established the first nursing research program at the institution. He remains an affiliate investigator at the Center. He has also served as director of research for the Oncology Nursing Society, headquartered in Pittsburgh.
Haberman earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through WSU/ICNE in 1971. He earned his Doctor of Nursing Science degree from the University of Washington in 1987 and completed a National Cancer Institute post-doctorate fellowship in psychosocial oncology. Haberman has served in the United States Army Reserve and retired in 1995 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
“I believe the ICNE faculty has the potential to play a leading role in health care research in Spokane and the region and to contribute significantly to the research mission of Washington State University. Especially important is the unique opportunity for College of Nursing faculty located across the state to conduct multi-site, collaborative research,” he said.

He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role,” says ICNE/WSU College of Nursing Dean Dorothy Detlor. “Research is essential to continue the development of the scientific foundations of nursing practice. Our faculty have participated in various research efforts in the past, but this appointment marks the beginning of a new era of increased emphasis on research.”
The ICNE/WSU College of Nursing is the nation’s oldest nursing education consortium institution. Founded in 1968, the center offers baccalaureate, postgraduate and professional development coursework to nursing students enrolled through its four consortium partners: Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Washington State University and Whitworth College.
