PULLMAN, Wash. — Having purchased Washington State University collegiate license plate number 9999, Sam Hunt of Olympia will receive two tickets to the 1999 Apple Cup football game.
Hunt, who has already purchased tickets to this year’s game, won the tickets as part of a WSU promotion celebrating the sale of 10,000 collegiate license plates statewide. Grant Scott of Pullman also won two tickets for spotting Hunt’s 1993 red Nissan pickup with the number 9999 Cougar plate while he was in Olympia.
Since the program was created by the state legislature in 1994 to fund college scholarships and display school pride, WSU supporters have purchased twice as many plates as those from any other university in the state. Those sales have generated more than $715,000 for WSU scholarships, as a minimum $28 of the annual $30 licensing fee for each plate is contributed to the university whose logo is on the plate.
Both Hunt and Scott called the WSU Foundation to identify themselves as winners after Cougar sports announcer Bob Robertson mentioned the contest during his radio broadcast of the Cougar-Stanford football game.
