PULLMAN, Wash. — A bronze plaque was unveiled Friday, Sept. 18, as the courtyard and gardens on the east side of the Lewis Alumni Centre at Washington State University were dedicated to Bob Smawley. The dedication came during the Alumni Association’s annual fall board of directors’ dinner.
Smawley was recognized for 50 years of service to WSU and the WSU Alumni Association. For 20 years he served as secretary of the Alumni Association, and was president of the alumni organization in 1989-90, when the university celebrated its centennial. This year, the Alumni Association is marking its centennial.
He retired as assistant to the vice president for university affairs at WSU in 1993. He joined the university in 1953 as athletic ticket manager in the office of intercollegiate athletics and also coordinated the Cougar Club. He later became manager of university purchasing, director of general services, director of the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum and director of university relations.
The Pullman native and 1952 WSU graduate is considered the unofficial historian of the university. He is noted for his many narrated slide presentations on WSU. He also takes pride in planting and maintaining the flowers around the Lewis Alumni Centre.
