Concrete Canoe Leaders Seek Spirited ’99 Team

PULLMAN, Wash. — Plans to recapture the title for civil engineering’s annual regional Concrete Canoe Competition already are gleams in the eyes of this year’s Washington State University student team leaders.
According to hull designer Pat Ryan, they’re looking for “more than a few good people” willing to work on the canoe, train as rowers and engineer a cutting-edge model. WSU’s team was edged out of a win last spring by the University of Washington, thereby drowning WSU’s nine-year championship title run.
This year’s team leaders Ralph Wagner and Robin Adolphsen say their year is focused on late March or early April, when they hit the regionals in Portland, Ore. They also seek company sponsors to help them regain the “winning tradition.”
