PULLMAN, Wash.–Washington State University students and high school students studying in Pullman are invited to apply for awards in the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Project. Application deadline is Dec. 15.
The pilot community service effort was created to enhance awareness within the Pullman community of the life and teachings of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., said Liza Rognas, director of the YWCA of WSU, one of the project’s sponsors.
Other sponsors are the WSU Community Service Learning Center, the WSU Office of Multicultural Student Services, WSU Diversity Education Program, and the Pullman School District.
Through a training program, several students, each receiving $500 stipends, will study the writings, history and philosophy of King. Then they will facilitate a series of workshops about King with the local schools, community agencies and libraries, she said.
“The goal of the program is to engage community members, particularly youth, in dialogs about the life and teachings of Dr. King and to encourage cooperative community service efforts,” said Rognas.
