PULLMAN, Wash.–Wendy Peterson, coordinator of new student programs, has been named acting director of admissions at Washington State University effective Nov. 5, K.J. “Gus” Kravas, vice provost for student affairs, announced today.
Peterson will oversee all recruitment activity for the Pullman campus, coordinate recruitment activity for the branch campuses and work closely with university academic colleges and departments to facilitate admission services to students and the campus community, Kravas said.
Terry Flynn, who has been admissions director since 1989, is resigning to become alumni relations director at Eastern Washington University.
Kravas also announced that Monty Nielsen, university registrar, will assume administrative responsibility for several enrollment service functions currently performed by the admissions staff, including transcript evaluation and application processing.
A 1982 graduate of WSU, Peterson was appointed assistant director of admissions in 1983. She was admissions coordinator at Skagit Valley College in 1986-87, then returned to WSU. Peterson was appointed coordinator of new student programs in 1993.
Nielsen came to WSU in 1993 from the University of North Dakota, where he was director of admissions and records.
Kravas said he is pleased to have an individual with Peterson’s breath of experience to assist the university with this important challenge. “Her past experience in the admissions field, coupled with her success in developing an outstanding program for new student orientation, makes her an ideal choice for the interim position.
“In Monty’s current position and in his previous assignment, he has demonstrated an ability to create and manage office processes that are efficient and student-friendly,” Kravas commented.
A national search for a permanent admissions director will be initiated within the next few weeks, Kravas said.
