Committees Selected for Recreation Center Project

PULLMAN, Wash.–President Samuel Smith has appointed two committees to participate in the selection of an architect for a new Student Recreation Center at Washington State University and to determine what programs and facilities will be included in the building.
William Turner, WSU facilities development, will chair the Architect Selection Committee. Student members are Neil Walker, student body president; Brent Nysoe, chair of the Service and Activities Fees Committee and ASWSU vice president; Micki Archuleta, president of the Graduate and Professional Student Association; and undergraduate Patrick McAdams. Other members are Ernie Weiss and Jay Becker, facilities development; Tim McCarty, director of the Compton Union Building; Bob Stephens, activities and recreational sports; and consultant Paul Brailsford.
Five West Coast architectural firms will make presentations to the committee Sept. 3-4, with a recommendation from the committee to the university administration to immediately follow.
The planning committee will be co-chaired by Nysoe and McCarty. McAdams also will serve on the planning committee along with undergraduate appointees Sommer Damm, Renee Taormina, and Jeff Elbracht. Graduate student representatives will be Archuleta and Abraham John Kannankeril, GPSA vice president. Weiss, Stephens and Turner also are planning committee members.
The first meeting of the planning committee is scheduled for Aug. 20.
Design and construction for the recreation center is expected to take about three years. It will be paid for with student fees.
