PULLMAN, Wash. – In the first agreement of its kind nationwide because of its low rates and benefit to students, GST Telecom of Vancouver, Wash., is partnering up with Washington State University Aug. 4 to provide long-distance calling services to support scholarships.
Ten cents of every dollar will fund student scholarships. The long-distance rate is 10.9 cents per minute for calls anywhere in the United States, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. WSU anticipates raising $500,000 to $1 million each year from the rebate.
Travel calling cards, pre-paid calling cards and an option for WSU students in which their student identification card serves as their calling card are also available. The rate applies to both home and business telephone service in the 11 western states.
“WSU is committed to providing more scholarship support for students, both to attract top students to our programs and to ensure that those who might not otherwise be able to afford it have an opportunity to seek higher education,” said Steve Schauble, director of finance for the WSU Foundation and coordinator of the project. “This is an innovative way to fund more scholarships while offering a telephone rate for Cougar alumni and friends that is extremely competitive.”
WSU’s effort to raise funds for scholarships has seen major progress in recent years. Through contributions to Campaign WSU, the University’s first comprehensive fund-raising campaign, the University’s scholarship endowment tripled, from $14.8 million in 1990 to more than $46 million today. Some 3,100 students receive WSU scholarships.
