WSU Students Register for Classes from Home

PULLMAN, Wash.–Washington State University students can create the perfect fall semester schedule and avoid standing in hour-long lines, filling out bubble sheets and hiking to Beasley Coliseum and French Ad. now that the new touchtone phone and World Wide Web registration system, METRO, is firmly in place.
“Students are getting more educational bang for their buck,” said Richard Backes, WSU assistant registrar and one of the METRO designers. The new registration system–Moving Enrollment to Real-Time Opportunities–allows students to review their schedules so that they can make the necessary changes long before classes start, Backes said.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of METRO before they come back to Pullman, so that the Web and the telephone lines will not be flooded with the 40,000 transactions that normally occur during the first 10 days of classes, Backes said. “The Web and touchtone phones together can effectively handle only about 100 people at one time,” the METRO designer said. “For those who wait to return to campus to use METRO, the wait may be longer than it needs to be.”
METRO’s Web capacity is 30 users at one time and the touchtone phone’s capacity is 70 users. Since METRO got its start on June 2, the system has already processed more than 15,000 transactions. The new system is currently being introduced to students participating in Alive, WSU’s new student orientation program, Backes said.
Using the touchtone phone can take less than five minutes, and all a student needs is his or her student ID, month and date of birth and the desired schedule line number(s), Backes said. The time schedule can be found in the time schedule booklet or on the Web using the url: www.registrar.wsu.edu. To register for classes by phone, call any of the following numbers: Pullman campus, 509-335-0100; WSU Spokane, 509-358-7700; WSU Tri-Cities, 509-372-7425; or WSU Vancouver, 360-546-9500.
Students who wish to drop or add classes this summer using METRO can do so from 6 a.m.-8 p.m., daily. To register using the Web, go to the url: www.metro.wsu.edu. Students will need their network ID and password.
