PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University President Elson S. Floyd today accepted the invitation of Washington Governor-elect Jay Inslee to serve as one of three advisory team co-chairs to assist Inslee with his transition into office.

Floyd, who will serve with co-chairs Brad Smith, general counsel and vice president of Microsoft Corporation, and Dr. Mary Alice Heuschel, superintendent of Renton Public Schools, said he sees his appointment by the incoming governor as an excellent opportunity to assist in addressing the needs of public education in Washington state.

"I am honored to be asked to serve in such a capacity and quite pleased that Governor Inslee has placed such an emphasis on the educational challenges and opportunities facing our state,” said Floyd. "There are a number of initiatives from his campaign that I believe are particularly vital to our educational and economic future.  Those include giving emphasis to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in public education, providing affordable access to higher education for low and middle-income students, and applying the strengths of our research programs and expertise toward the development of new job-creating technologies for our state.”

Inslee asked that each of the co-chairs offer opinions on candidates for key cabinet positions, and recommend people to fill those positions. Following the transition committee work, Inslee is also asking that Floyd remain available to provide advice and insights on managing and bringing change to large organizations, while offering his counsel on important matters facing the state over the coming four years.
