Faculty Artist Series begins year with vocal duets

PULLMAN, Wash. - Vocal duets performed by Washington State University faculty will launch the School of Music’s year-long Faculty Artist Series at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in Bryan Hall Theatre.
In "Let’s Duet!” Julie Anne Wieck, soprano, and Sheila Kearney Converse, mezzo-soprano, will present selections by Bach, Mozart, Rossini, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy, Hoiby and Schickele. They will be accompanied by faculty members Gerald Berthiaume, piano, and Meredith Arksey, violin.
Proceeds from ticket sales in the series benefit the School of Music Scholarship Fund. Tickets, on sale one hour before performances in the Bryan Hall lobby, cost $10 general admission, $5 senior citizens and non-WSU students and free for WSU students with ID.
Faculty Artist Series performances scheduled for 2012-2013 are:
* Sept. 28: "Borrowing from Our Friends: Our Favorite Transcriptions,” faculty favorites originally written for other instruments, featuring Jill Schneider, David Turnbull, Chris Dickey, Shannon Scott, Dave Snider and Ann Yasinitsky.
* Oct. 12: "Blues and the Abstract Truth,” compositions by Oliver Nelson from his classic recording "Blues and the Abstract Truth,” presented by faculty ensemble Jazz Northwest.
* Oct. 26: "The Classical Bassoon and the Modern Bassoon,” a solo and chamber recital featuring new works by Ryan M. Hare and Aleks Sternfeld-Dunn, as well as music from the early 19th century by Weber and Beethoven.
* Jan. 11: "Il Dolce Suono,” featuring original compositions for the euphonium and tuba with Chris Dickey, accompanied by and Kristin Elgersma, University of Idaho, on piano.
* Jan. 25: The Palouse Trio presents an evening of inspiring masterworks, including Piazzolla's quintessential "Libertango."
* March 1: The Digital Honkbox Revival, a guest ensemble featuring WSU’s Scott Blasco, presents a special blend of interactive electroacoustic and multimedia herbs and spices.
* March 8: WSU’s acclaimed resident Solstice Wind Quintet will perform masterworks by Harbison, Ravel and Beethoven, featuring: Ann Marie Yasinitsky, flute; Shannon Scott, clarinet; Ryan Hare, bassoon; Keri McCarthy, oboe; and Matthew Aubin, horn.
