Imagine U

Four high schools to experience WSU’s award-winning program

Friday, May 11, 2012

PULLMAN, Wash.—Students in four Washington high schools will experience Washington State University’s award-winning program "Imagine U at College” this month.

Up to 16 WSU faculty members will join staff and students in traveling to Goldendale High School (May 14), Granger High School (May 15), Ritzville High School (May 21) and Lynnwood High School (May 22).

Janette Mariscal, coordinator of the Imagine U program, said WSU strategically selects schools that are diverse and usually don’t get a lot of attention from college recruiters.

Mariscal remembers when the Imagine U program came to her own school when she was a student at Brewster High School.  Participating in the program changed her life.  "Even though I did pretty well in school, I didn’t realize I was college material until I participated in the Imagine U program,” she said.

The program is intended to expose students who are high school juniors or younger to opportunities available to them at college.  They attend academic workshops in a variety of fields and learn about college life from WSU students.

High school students are not the only ones who will benefit from Imagine U.  The programs in Goldendale and Granger include family nights where parents can learn about topics such as financing a college education, college entrance requirements, and student support services.

Last week WSU’s Imagine U program received the 2012 Program of Excellence Award at the Pacific Northwest Association for College Admission Counseling Conference in Reno, Nevada.

In describing Imagine U during the awards presentation, Paula Sutton, chair of the selection committee, said "clearly this has been a successful and far reaching program.”
