PULLMAN, Wash. - Pomp and Circumstance gave way to wide smiles and cheers as Washington State University celebrated its 116th spring commencement Saturday on the Pullman campus.

About 2,600 students were awarded degrees at three separate ceremonies at the Beasley Coliseum. WSU Spokane held commencement on May 4 and ceremonies are planned for WSU Tri-Cities on May 11 and WSU Vancouver on May 12.

WSU officials said a total of 6,574 degrees would be awarded by the university on all campuses during ceremonies in December 2011 and this spring. The total includes 5,594 bachelor’s degrees, 761 master’s degrees and 219 doctoral degrees.

Gov. Christine Gregoire was the guest speaker at the 8 a.m. ceremony for the College of Liberal Arts and WSU President Elson S. Floyd presented her with an honorary doctorate. It is only the 26th honorary degree ever granted by the WSU Board of Regents.
