Spokane, Wash.—Upward Bound scholars from Ferry and Stevens Counties gave back to the community on April 22 during the Eastern Washington Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Downtown Spokane. Sixteen scholars from Columbia, Mary Walker, and Wellpinit High Schools volunteered for the annual event.
Program Director, Claudine Richardson said, "I am extremely delighted with the scholars and chaperones—Romeal Watson and Deana Buche. These students never cease to amaze us. They volunteered their weekend when they could have been playing in the sun.”
The student scholars worked a myriad of stations giving them a better understanding of responsibility, hard work, and working with a variety of people.
Upward Bound is a federally funded program for first-generation, low-income and at risk students. The program prepares scholars for academic and social success in high school and college. Scholars from Ferry and Stevens Counties traveled three hours to contribute to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
"After three and a half hours, students were still willing to give more,” said Richardson. "I am happy that this was an exciting and successful event for Susan G. Komen and the Upward Bound Scholars. Volunteering for events like this enhances community bonds, friendships and paves the cobble stones to success.”
