PULLMAN, Wash. – Beasley Coliseum is among a few of the athletic facilities around campus that are part of a year-long athletic branding initiative. The WSU athletic department teamed up with the Nike "graphic identity group,” which completed the graphics for WSU with a published graphics standard last April.

"Specifically, the branding initiative started with the development of our graphic identity, such as the development of our font, colors and other elements related to the look of our uniforms,” said John Johnson, senior associate director of athletics at WSU and project manager.

WSU Athletic Director Bill Moos had the idea that Cougar Athletics needed a consistent look. Moos has a long history of being a Coug and has seen all the various colors, fonts and styles that have been used over the years to brand WSU athletics.

Moos said in an article on the WSU Athletics website, "One of my priorities when I became athletic director was to have a recognizable look across our department and athletic programs. We have what I and many believe to be the best logo in college athletics, yet we have not had the consistent look on our apparel or throughout our facilities that allows instant recognition for that brand.”

The brand identity elements were developed by Downstream Inc. in Portland, and their designers reviewed the spaces and created a visual for each athletic building, said Johnson.

The branding project at Beasley has been completed, which included the installation of vinyl graphics depicting great basketball players of WSU’s past and the addition of significant moments in the history of WSU basketball. The large crimson vinyl graphics can be seen in the concourse of Beasley and other various paintings and graphics can be seen in the inner concourse as well, said Johnson.

The design of the basketball floor was completed last summer as part of the project. It includes the new graphics and font. Additional graphics were incorporated in the athlete’s corridor underneath the arena, located next to the locker rooms, said Johnson.

Other athletic facilities that have been branded are the men's and women’s practice gym and Gibb Pool. Bohler Gym, its office complex and Bailey Brayton Field are in the process of adding brand elements as well, said Johnson.
