PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University President Elson S. Floyd sees the compromise budget passed by Washington lawmakers Wednesday morning as a strong recognition of the importance of higher education in the state. He praised lawmakers for standing up for Washington’s universities in passing a budget that ends the series of deep cuts seen over the past five years.
"Our state’s leaders are to be commended for protecting Washington’s values and recommitting to higher education,” said Floyd. "This is a budget that stops the bleeding and positions us to begin building a stronger future.”
The budget represents essentially a zero cut to Washington’s higher education system. Included in the package are provisions for WSU to increase engineering enrollment to help the state’s growing aerospace industry.
The Legislature also approved a capital budget that provides funding mechanisms allowing WSU to move forward with completion of the Biomedical and Health Sciences building in Spokane. Half the construction funding was approved last year and construction began last summer.
"These budgets recognize the valuable role our higher education system plays in providing a future for our students and our economy at large,” said Floyd.
Both budgets will go to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
