PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University Police have received reports of a scam call being made to residents of Washington, Michigan, Pennsylvania and other states fraudulently requesting money for 9-1-1 services.
WSU Police Chief Bill Gardner said the caller reportedly claims that residents must pay a fee to register their home in a 9 1 1 database in order that emergency responders can locate the home in an emergency. The caller also asks for names and medical information related to the residents.
"If you receive such a call, you need to be aware that it is a scam,” said Gardner. "Anyone who requests funds for 9-1-1 services over the phone is a fraud. The services are funded through dedicated 9-1-1 excise taxes collected through telephone billing and from other available local government funds.”
Gardner said anyone receiving such a call should decline to give out any personal information and report the call and the caller’s number to their local police or sheriff office using the appropriate non-emergency phone number. The non-emergency number for WSU Police is 509-332-2521.
