OLYMPIA, Wash. - Teens campaign, give speeches and learn about the political process during the WSU Extension 4-H Know Your Government conference in Olympia. The annual event draws high school youth from around the state to explore citizen democracy and how to make a difference in their communities and beyond.

More than 200 teens took part in the elections and party platform curriculum Feb. 18-21. They became candidates, election managers and political consultants. Exploring different political parties, nominating peers for elective office and developing resolutions to create a party platform highlighted the conference.

Started in 1978, the conference is a hands-on educational opportunity for youth in grades 9-12. More than 90,000 youth participate in 4-H programs statewide in areas including science, leadership, service learning, the arts and technology.
