PULLMAN, Wash. – Classic pieces for winds and music from around the world will be performed at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in Bryan Hall at Washington State University in a free, public concert by the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and guest Pullman Community Band.

 

Under the direction of Christopher Neal, WSU director of bands, the Wind Ensemble will present: Percy Grainger’s "Lincolnshire Posy,” a mainstay of the band repertoire that is a clever exploration of numerous British folksongs; the tour de force "Septet” by Paul Hindemith; and Adam Gorb’s "Yiddish Dances,” which explores the richness of traditional Yiddish music, complete with Klezmer clarinet excerpts.

 

The Wind Ensemble is preparing for a performance at the College Band Directors National Association West/Northwest Regional Conference in March. Invited after competitive taped auditions, the group will make its first appearance at the conference in nearly 20 years.

The Symphonic Band will be joined by the Pullman Community Band to perform music from around the world: "A Festival Prelude” by American composer Alfred Reed; "Danse Bacchanale” by the Frenchman Camille Saint-Saens, "English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and "Galop” by the Russian powerhouse Dmitri Shostakovich.

 

The Symphonic Band is under the direction of instructor Chris Dickey, and the Pullman Community Band is under the direction of Heidi Jarvis.
