Update on Martin Stadium football project

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Martin Stadium Football Operations Building project has been progressing steadily since the closing “Yahoo!” in last year’s Apple Cup, Nov. 26, when the Cougars stunned the Huskies 31-28 in overtime.

Now the goal is to get the new stadium addition completed by May 1, 2014. The construction site is easy to find, just look for the area’s only skycrane, located on the west end of the stadium.

That means that Cougar football fans will be watching the construction project throughout the football season, with the first home game slated for Sept. 14, against Southern Utah.

Larry Harris, senior project manager with WSU Capital Planning and Development, said the project “is on schedule; things are going fine.” His office, along with WSU Athletics and Parking Services, has been planning for access to the football stadium for the past five weeks.

“All stadium gates, except the one at the northwest corner, will be open for use,” Harris said. People also will be able to enter the field from the southwest corner adjacent to Rogers Field and the CUB Towers. To make it easy, he said there will be an abundance of directional signage.

In addition to the building, installation of a new scoreboard will begin Monday, Aug. 5, Harris said. The scoreboard is expected to be complete before the Sept. 14 game.

Football Operations Building

The $61 million Football Operations Building is the second phase in the Martin Stadium project. The building will provide a home for the Cougar football program, including a new weight room, lockers, equipment and training rooms for players in addition to position meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It will feature a WSU football heritage area and a game-day home for Gray W former letter winners.

The 84,192 square foot building will complement the surrounding campus buildings by use of brick, metal wall panels and glass.

WSU Athletics has said the stadium improvements will increase recruiting potential and will make the facility competitive in the Pac-12.
