March 26: Berthiaume presents Distinguished Faculty Address

berthiaume-80PULLMAN, Wash. – Gerald Berthiaume has been selected to give the 2015 Distinguished Faculty Address as part of the annual Showcase celebration.

The address, “From the Practice Room to the Stage: Do Your Research,” will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in Kimbrough Concert Hall. Reservations are requested at http://showcase.wsu.edu/dfaregistration/.

Berthiaume will explain the elaborate, disciplined process of preparing for a musical performance – a process that includes research, artistic evaluation and soul-searching as well as physical preparation through conscientious, diligent practice.

showcase-logoThis annual award from Washington State University recognizes a faculty member whose achievements in research, scholarship and teaching place him or her in the front ranks of his or her discipline.

Berthiaume, a professor in the School of Music at WSU since 1989, is an internationally recognized pianist and music educator.

He has lectured and performed as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician in the United States, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Ukraine. He won the U.S. Information Agency Artistic Ambassador Competition and accompanied William Walker of the Metropolitan Opera and James King of the Vienna State Opera. His solo and chamber music performances are available on several recording labels.

Berthiaume teaches studio piano lessons at WSU, coaches chamber music groups and serves on graduate and other committees. He co-directs the Summer Keyboard Explorations piano camp and served as director of the WSU School of Music 2003-11.

He was recently named a Foundation Fellow by the Music Teachers National Association and has spoken and performed at national conventions of the association, College Music Society and the Society of Composers. He is past chair of the Washington State Music Teachers Association Education Board.
